Mexico's Attorney General's Office sends corruption case to court

The Attorney General's Office (FGR) took a key step in one of the most visible cases of recent months by sending a case to court against María Amparo Casar, president of Mexicans Against Corruption, to be tried for her probable involvement in the crime of illicit use of powers and faculties.

According to the accusation, the case is related to the lifetime pension granted by Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) following the death of her husband, Carlos Fernando Márquez Padilla, which occurred on October 7, 2004, while he was serving as an executive at the state-owned company.

According to the FGR, the investigation points to the economic benefit having been granted without meeting the legal requirements, causing an estimated patrimonial damage of 31 million pesos, derived from the payment of 125 thousand pesos monthly for several years.

In May 2024, then Pemex Director General Octavio Romero Oropeza reported that Márquez Padilla joined the company on June 1, 2004, as Executive Coordinator of the Corporate Administration Directorate, during the sexenium of former President Vicente Fox, and died just 129 days later.

During the morning press conference that month, it was announced that Márquez died after falling from a 12th-floor window of Building A at Pemex's headquarters.

Although the expert reports indicated it was a suicide, none of the documents formally stated that conclusion.

Documents from the Federal Judiciary (PJF) confirm that the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Combating Corruption requested an initial hearing against María Amparo Casar Pérez and two other people to charge them with the crime of illicit use of powers and faculties, as provided for in Article 217, fraction II, of the Federal Penal Code, in force at the time of the facts.
